Inter-American Defense College

The Inter-American Defense College, located at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC, is an international educational institution operating under the aegis and funding of the Organization of American Sates and the Inter-American Defense Board. It provides a professionally oriented, multidisciplinary, graduate-level course of study in Western Hemisphere defense and security affairs. This eleven-month program provides senior military and government officials from member states of the Organization of American states an opportunity to study broad based security issues affecting the hemisphere and the international community.

Since its beginning in 1962, over 1,950 students from 23 different countries have graduated from the college. Over 40 percent of the graduates have risen to general officer or admiral rank or the civilian equivalent, and two of the College's graduates have gone on to become Presidents of their respective countries. As demonstrated through its distinguished graduates, the College educates talented men and women for important leadership roles in the Americas. The eleven month Advanced Course on Hemispheric defense and Security is continuously updated and modernized to reflect pertinent issues and challenges most relevant to the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Defense Board.

These topics are addressed through a detailed study of the political, economic, social and military factors impacting and influencing the Inter-American System and the international community. An international faculty, featuring adjunct professors from American University in Washington, DC and the University Del Salvador of Argentina, complements the diversity and breadth of experience of the student body. The College makes full use of the unparalledted research and educational opportunities available in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and also conducts study visits to academic centers in the United States and throughout the Americas.
