Art Instruction Schools, Inc.

Art Instruction Schools Incorporated is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bureau of Engraving, Incorporated, a privately owned corporation. Located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the school has offered distance-delivered art courses since 1914.

Art Instruction Schools offers Fundamentals of Art and Foundation of Art Studies programs. The Fundamentals of Art program consists of 27 lessons and requires a typical student two years and more than 1,000 hours to complete. The Foundation of Art Studies program consists of 15 lessons and requires a typical student one year to complete. The curriculum of the Foundation of Art Studies program consists of the foundation courses of the lower and upper level courses of its sister program - Fundamentals of Art program. For each lesson, students must submit artwork that demonstrates proficiency in the techniques and concepts presented in the lesson. Students may, through independent work and practice, learn more than they are required to demonstrate in assignments. Institutions are urged to evaluate portfolios individually to determine the exact amount of credit to be awarded.

Students applying for college credit are required to take proctored, objective art examinations. Students are also required, as part of the examination, to submit a portfolio that is evaluated by a faculty committee and counts as part of the final grade. Institutions should review the portfolio in determining the credit award.
