Art Instruction Schools, Inc.

Art Instruction Schools, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bureau of Engraving, Inc., a privately owned corporation. Located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the school has offered art courses by correspondence since 1914.

Art Instruction Schools offers Fundamentals of Art and Specialized Art courses. The Fundamentals of Art course, which is a prerequisite of the Specialized Art course, consists of twenty-seven lessons and requires a typical student two years and more than 1,000 hours to complete. The Specialized Art course consists of twenty-seven lessons and requires a typical student two years and more than 1,400 hours to complete. For each lesson, students must submit artwork that demonstrates proficiency in the techniques and concepts presented in the lesson. Students may, through independent work and practice, learn more than they are required to demonstrate in assignments. Institutions are urged to evaluate portfolios individually to determine the exact amount of credit to be awarded.

Students applying for college credit are required to take proctored, objective art examinations. Students are also required, as part of the examination, to submit a portfolio that is evaluated by a faculty committee and counts as part of the final grade. Institutions should review the portfolio in determining the credit award.
