American Montessori Society
The National Center for Montessori Education (NCME) was established in 1977 as a non-profit educational organization developed for the express purpose of serving the needs of the Montessori community by accrediting qualified Montessori teacher education institutions and programs. NCME encourages and supports the development of such institutions and programs in communities both large and small.
NCME currently accredits twenty-six institutions/programs that provide thirty-six courses within the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Peru. Courses are available in the following levels: Infant/Toddler (Birth-3), Early Childhood (3-6), Elementary I (6-9), and Elementary I/II (6-12). All courses are reviewed annually to ensure compliance with NCME's mutually agreed upon standards and criteria. Course instructors teaching the basic Montessori curriculum are highly qualified experienced Montessori educators. Additionally, all instructors are carefully selected for their expertise in their field of instruction.
With the growing demand for qualified staff to work with children in Montessori schools, there is severe need for certified Montessori teachers. Currently over 2,100 students have completed NCME courses and receive Montessori teacher certification.
In addition, NCME supports the Montessori community by providing continuing education through a National Conference, attended each year by over 1,600 participants, and the The National Montessori Reporter
, a quarterly publication that is mailed to over 9,000 schools and teachers.
NCME is a recognized organization with the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) and currently has twelve MACTE accredited courses.
